Summer Here Summer Gone
Birthday Celebrations
August was full of family time and gatherings for birthday celebrations. My grandpa, my sister, and I all share a birthday in August. It was so nice to have Lex home for a week to celebrate and revive after teaching summer school before heading back to Brooklyn to take on another school year. We were fortunate to have some great weather and enjoyed our time in the sun, hanging with the pups, took a day trip to San Clemente, some golfing at El Camino Country Club and had some much needed family time with our grandparents.
For our Pop-Pop's birthday, I got to experience the course for the first time, dad and Pop-Pop got to work on their game, and mom and Lex surprised us with their hidden talent.
We celebrated Mama Fili's big 85th birthday with all her family. It was so nice for her to be able to celebrate with all her brothers and sisters. She was truly so happy that day. A day full of Filipino food and majong, can't get much better than that!
Don't Throw Your Brown Bananas Away!
If you are one of those people who get grossed out by browning bananas... think again. They are sweetest and most ripe when they have some brown spots. Although they might not look the most attractive or apPEELing, they are pretty tasty in your smoothies and banana bread. If you are using in banana bread, keep them as mushy as possible. If you decide to throw them in a smoothie or smoothie bowl, keep them frozen and use as needed for desired thickness and sweetness.
4 Ingredient Flourless Banana Bread
- 2 C Gluten Free Oats
- 4 to 5 ripe bananas
- 1 C nut butter of your choice
- 1 C chocolate chips
Blend together oats, bananas, and nut butter until a thick, smooth consistency occurs. Be careful not to over blend so the bread can rise. Fold in amount of chocolate chips of your choice. Bake at 350F for 30-35 minutes in a greased bread pan. Allow to rest, slice, and enjoy!
Post Workout Easy Smoothie
- 1 to 2 C almond milk
- 1 C frozen spinach
- 1 frozen banana
- 2 handfuls frozen strawberries
- 1 TBSP almond butter
- 1 scoop vanilla vegan protein
Blend together all ingredients adding more liquid if needed until you reach the consistency of your liking. Don't worry if the color is a little off...the taste is amazing especially right after a sweaty workout or hot afternoon run!
Workout of the Month - The Benefits of Running
I've committed to a new running regimen for the whole year. On my 24th birthday this month, I decided to challenge myself to run at LEAST 1 mile every day until the day I turn 25.
I only really started running about a year ago and I know how much my cardiovascular health and lean muscle has improved. Now it is hard for me to go a day without running! Some tips I have for first time runners:
Go slow, you don't need to run a marathon, a little bit each day. The rule of thumb is typically a tenth of a mile increase per week.
Start with walking. If you can't jog, set a timer for 30 minutes and briskly walk each day.
HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE. From person experience, I've learned how big of a difference my body feels while and after I run depending on my hydration the day prior.
Focus on recovery and nutrition to set yourself up for the most success.
All you have to do is take the first step.
NYC Tour Guide - Your Must 3 To Do's
Whether it is your very first time to New York City or your 100th, these are MUST DO's for every trip!
1. Try a new pizzeria.
There are so many to try! Look up a few must see or must try pizza shops. Make it apart of your plans depending where you are going to visit throughout the day. Some of the best ones are right next door to some of the most fun bars.
2. Museum, park, gallery or site.
Something historic, meaningful, or a place to learn something new. There are plenty of museums, historical sites, and pop up galleries that change throughout the year. One of my personal favorites is the 9/11 memorial.
3. Dessert, speakeasy, or Juniors Cheesecake.
We've all seen the cool, unheard of places to try while in the city that never sleeps. Find one "insta" famous spot you want to try and see if it is worth the hype. You can never go wrong with Juniors Cheesecake!
